Omega-3 Benefits: Why Testing Your Levels Matters

One thing I have learned since my initiation into the world of clinical nutrition is how little we recognize nutrient deficiencies. And in a sense, this is partly by design. As the Bible says, our bodies are fearfully and wonderfully made! (Psalm 139:14) This means that we do not have to have every nutrient every day in order to survive. This is in part because some nutrients are made by our bodies, and some are stored for future use.
This amazing fact, along with an abundance of easy-to-find ultra processed foods, has led to a complacency in making sure we get quality food full of vitamins and minerals and other essential nutrients.
Omega-3 and Inflammation: Why It Matters
One critical nutrient that we must have is omega 3 fatty acids. This is one of the most studied nutrients because of the role it plays in a variety of different systems and functions. Some of these critical functions include brain health, joint health, cardiovascular health, eye health and the role of resolving inflammation. All of these areas are critical through all stages of life, but too often we consider deterioration in these areas as an acceptable part of aging. But if these things are all connected to a single nutrient deficiency, one simple way to avoid some of the most common symptoms of aging would be to make sure ample nutrients are being consumed.

Foods Rich in Omega-3
Some common omega-3 foods include fatty fish (such as salmon, mackerel, anchovies and sardines), walnuts, avocados, and chia seeds. Although these foods are common, most people in our part of the world do not eat enough of them to create optimal health. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on your perspective), we do not see the effects of this deficiency quickly and even when we do, sometimes we do not recognize it. For example, low omega levels have been linked to things like ADHD symptoms.
How to Test Your Omega-3 Levels & What Is an Optimal Omega-3 Level
How do you know that you are getting enough omega 3’s? The only way to truly know your omega-3 status is to test. The omega 3 index score ideally falls between 10 and 12%. Unfortunately, almost everybody in America falls below the 5% mark, leaving many of us in a chronic state of deficiency. A deficiency that can lead to increased inflammation, higher risk of cardiovascular events and cognitive decline.
