Why More Moms Are Seeking Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy?

In the hustle and bustle of baby preparations many worry about having the proper bottles, cribs, blankets and the perfect baby shower theme. Moms instinctively know the importance of preparation for when baby comes, the kind of preparation that can make or break a smooth transition. What you need to add to the list, and what many moms are discovering, is the importance of chiropractic care in pregnancy, birth, and post-partum.

During pregnancy, a hormone called relaxin surges causing the connective tissues to loosen--a good thing! But also a thing that can cause pain and discomfort for mom. As baby grows, there is mounting pressure and demand on the pelvic floor. Think of the pelvic floor like a hammock of muscles to cradle baby. The bump grows, the pressure mounts, and mom’s center of gravity shifts-- all contributing to pain and discomfort. These manifest as sciatica, pubic bone discomfort, low back pain to name a few-- but the pain is just signals of a stressed and out of balance body under intense demand.

Chiropractic care is known to help with these aches and pains, especially in pregnant moms. But there is something much deeper and profound at play: adjustments directly impact the nervous system of mom and therefore the nervous system of the growing baby! When mom is able to spend most of her pregnancy in a peaceful rest and digest state, all sorts of wonderful things may happen. Her pelvis can open up to allow baby to arrange themselves into the best position for birth, her digestion improves, aches and pains lessen, and she is connected to her calm in the most intense and demanding physiological event a human can undergo-- pregnancy and childbirth. Now, the stage is set for the best possible birth outcomes, the best possible postpartum, and the best possible recovery.

Let’s dig deeper, is it really safe to adjust pregnant moms? The American Pregnancy Association maintains that it is generally safe, with very little potential for side effects. Seeing a chiropractor proficient in the Webster Technique is also advised since this is a very gentle and effective method for balancing the pelvis. Doesn’t it make sense that moms are seeking out chiropractic care, not only for themselves, but for benefits to baby as well? A balanced pelvis and nervous system allow baby to thrive in the womb and beyond and keep mom comfortable and stable when the body undergoes massive changes and shifts. Let’s add “chiropractic” to our registry, our nesting list, our must-have items for pregnancy preparations. The investment into a balanced nervous system has the potential to promote a level of vitality that can span generations-- a legacy of living life vibrantly.
